7 (Neuroticly Obsessive) Quick Takes

  1. I'm starting to freak out. I have only gotten regrets from my "Please RSVP" note on my party invitation. Granted, even then, it's only been 3 of them and I invited 50 people, but still. AND! My "cousin" (my mom's best friend's daughter - she's "aunt Sharon" to me, so "cousin") is hosting a Thirty-One party the week before. We don't have a lot of friends in common, so that's not an issue, but she was one of my top prospects for both coming AND hosting a party, so that's out.
  2. And I keep finding these amazing deals for great little things I can put in my hostess gifts, door prizes, and "bring a friend" gifts. But I really think I should stop buying now. I don't even know what all I have at the moment - I need to stop, take stock and put the gifts together to see what I need still and yet, I have all this other stuff that is a higher priority for RIGHT NOW.
  3. I also keep thinking of cute little ideas to MAKE for said gifts, but then I'm like will people actually like them? I mean, every single one of these things is something I'd like to get, but I am not everyone. And I have a weird obsession with paper and journals and notepads, so there's that, too. And part of what I'd like to promote with my shows is the opportunity to help with organization, so do little things I've made (decorative candles, framed inspirational quotes) really help support that?
  4. What if this doesn't work out? What if I've spent time and money and effort and I fail from the get go? I know that these types of things are not always "easy" since you are only successful if you can continually book parties and you will quickly run out of friends to help you out.
  5. And that's the other thing. My closest friends? None of them have offered to host a party. I'm going to have to get a little more pushy and I don't really want to! My BF, K, even told me she wanted to do a Pampered Chef party soon, so she couldn't host a party for me. Seriously?
  6. I wanted to do some "bigger" gifts as well, like Starbucks giftcards, and even a couple of products (smaller ones, obviously) from Thirty-One, but I don't really know how to go about getting the freebies since I already placed my big order (I should have thought of this ahead!) and I'm assuming that I will have to send in a minimum order once I get started officially. I wish I didn't have this time limit hanging over my head and I could go ahead and sign my contract NOW. But then, since I'm freaking out about it a little, maybe that's not a good idea, either...
  7. Loyal reader Jessica asked "What is Thirty-One?" in the comments the other day. And I'm happy to explain! Thirty-One is a great little company that sells bags, totes, organizational items, as well as gifts. Many of the items can be personalized. Their selection is fun and functional and it is set up as an in-home product party type of of scenario and their employees/consultants are "independent contractors" so they have the opportunity to work for themselves and be flexible in their schedules. (Think Mary Kay, Party Lite, Pampered Chef etc.)

6 quick takes and a picture!

1. I think we're going out tonight with my sisterfriend and her husband. We're bringing the babies, but the older kids are all staying home. She's leaving her sleeping older children with her in-laws (who can only handle them when they are sleeping) and Fuss is spending the night with my mother. I'm kind of thrilled at that prospect.

2. Our internet is so inconsistent lately and it's sort of ticking me off that we are paying for a service that is so incredibly inconsistent.

3. I'm looking forward to this weekend for no other reason than having my reasonably-healthy husband home for 3 days in a row.

4. I've been doing something different with my hair lately - adding some product to my natural curls to help them stay as curly as possible and I was kind of happy with how it was looking. My husband likes the curls, and I do have fairly decent curls when the product does it's job. But the other morning I came across some reruns of the early days of Will and Grace and I'm minorly afraid that I might be looking like the early days of Grace - when she had little style and big frizzy curls that were sort of outrageous. Ah well. We work with what we have.

5. Yesterday Fuss ate terribly. All day. She never does this, so it was weird, but all she wanted was junk food and she wouldn't eat the regular stuff at all. At dinner, I gave her some food that she loved and she just wouldn't eat it. We gave her chance after chance, but I think she ate one fry and 2 bites of quesadilla in 60+minutes. So we put her to bed early. She was up at 4:30 complaining she was hungry. Hopefully she learned her lesson (since she has to stay in bed until 6).

6. The baby was up around the same time, so I was awake between 3:30 and 5 this morning. No fun.

7. I don't have a 7th thing, so here's a picture.

Aren't they cute?

8 Quick Takes

1. The Little Man has a second tooth popping through and is a big huge ball of drool. I don't even know where all that liquid comes from, he's so drooly. Wow.

2. Took my kids to visit their Aunt J for her birthday on Thursday. She works at (our) my alma mater. SO much has changed around there in the decade plus since I went to school there, but one thing remains the same - my 6th grade teacher, Mrs. B is still teaching there. She now teaches 3rd grade instead of 6th, but she was a fixture back then, and she is a fixture now. She taught all but one of my sisters-in-law, my husband, myself, my sister, my cousin... she's been there forever. It was fun to show off my kids to her. (and it seemed like she doesn't age. How is that possible?) She asked Fuss how old she was and was impressed when she told her very politely that she was 3. Then Fuss asked how old Mrs. B was. Mrs. B answered that she was 100. She certainly doesn't look it, but with the length of memories that I have of her (I began Kindergarten at that school more than 25 years ago and I'm pretty positive she was teaching there then) I'd believe it.

3. I am sick of hearing the words "but" and "remember" because my 3-year-old is constantly arguing with me ("but...") and bossing me ("now remember, Mommy,..."). It's become an issue and she is now being punished for bossing adults. This is a problem when my parents think it's so funny to hear a little midget instruct them. I don't find it funny at all.

4. I'm going to my first Tupperware party this weekend. I vaguely remember my mom going to them when I was a kid. Should be fun.

5. I am ticked off beyond measure that when shopping online, you cannot get items that are featured in their own site's promotional pictures. For example, I am looking at Ann Taylor Loft and there is this ADORABLE top in several of the sections labeled "Looks we love" and under their "style studio" they have the same outfit featured under a s sub-heading and they either never sold the top or it's completely out. That to me is pure laziness. Don't tell me you don't have other pictures of outfits that you DO sell. This frustrates me to no end when I'm shopping online. They aren't the only site that does it, but they seem to be the worst.

6. My mom and I are going shopping this weekend and I'm psyched. I LOVE new clothes.

7. I've been having weird twinges in my back, near my kidneys. I'm really hoping it's not a stone. It could potentially be just a muscle spasm/sore spot, but it bothers me that it keeps happening right there in the kidney area. Plus, I confess, I haven't been drinking as much water as I was and I am up in my soda intake, which is less good on the kidneys. (But my headaches seem to be back again, thanks to, I assume, my hormones going back into regular swing. Speaking of which, I should probably call my OB-GYN and get some BC pills...)

8. We watched part of the Royal Wedding this morning. It was so beautiful and I admit that I teared up a bit seeing how much in love they are... it's such a beautiful thing to see 2 young people in love.

Quick Takes (that have nothing to do w/ Luck)

1. Little Man keeps sucking on his bottom lip (it makes him look like a Cabbage Patch doll), but he sucks so hard, that he's basically given himself a hickey of sorts. It looks like he's got this horrible rash under his chin. Crazy kid.

2. We went to a bounce house play place yesterday with my MOPs group and Fuss had so much fun, but I think we've finally found something she's afraid of - really tall, fast slides. She went down one there and then climbed up again but was then afraid to slide down it again. I had to climb up (no small feat - as it was an inflatable ladder sort of thing, not meant for adult feet) and slide down with her on my lap. When Daddy Fuss took her to a park later that day, she told him she was scared of the big slide and would only go down the small slide. Who knew my fearless kid would find a slide intimidating?

3. I dropped off stuff to my friend's children's consignment sale yesterday and was able to shop a pre-sale. I got a few cute things for the kids and my friend M was able to get a couple of things for HER kids (since she drove with me). I'm really excited to get some money back for some of the stuff I have. I kept thinking of more things I could sell - if I get a nice check, then I think this could easily get addictive!

4. That being said, I'm stuck in a boy clothing quandry. The weather has gotten so warm (80's every day this week) that it's really necessary to dress the kids in summer clothes. But Little Man has only a handful of summer-appropriate items, but he's also at the top of this current size. I don't want to buy stuff in this size that won't likely last the bulk of the summer, but the next size up is too big. He can wear it, but it's really large on him. I have one set of half a dozen onesies and a few creepers, etc. But he has a very limited supply of nice looking clothes in this size.

5. My daughter is fabulous. She is friendly and fun and has SO much personality. But I'm starting to wonder if she's kind of bossy or too pushy to other kids, because sometimes when I see her interacting with other kids it seems like they don't always want to include her. I've felt like that my entire life - like I don't always fit in, like I'm not really included in groups of friends, only tolerated. I want to be good friends with people and a lot of times I feel left out of the "inner circle" and I don't want that for Fuss. I want her to be sweet and social and have best friends. The worry never ceases, does it?

6. I'm going to a baby shower tomorrow morning and I'm bringing the baby and Fuss is going to a volleyball tournament with Daddy Fuss to take pictures for Aunt LP's teams. (She's a volleyball coach) It should be interesting to see how that goes.

7. I went out to dinner with my friend M last night to have some girl time. She made the comment that she "lived to be a mom." I love my kids, wouldn't give them up for anything, but I don't know if I could honestly say that. I occasionally find myself oddly jealous of M who is going through an awkward separation in her marriage/family because she has some dedicated time to herself. (I have no desire to leave my husband or kids and my heart breaks for her when I think about it like that, but just some real time alone or without my kids would be nice sometimes!) I think this might end up being a whole other post in itself.

7 Quick Takes

Ugh. My head hurts.

1. Yesterday, I did my work out, but it was sort of half-assed and the baby started crying with 5 minutes to go and I just gave up. I had a bad attitude and I was sore and stressed and I just wanted chocolate. When I told that to my husband he said "sounds like you're about to start your period" and he was right - it did sound like that. But I'm not ready to start my period! Gosh darn it, I should still have MONTHS left of this non-menstrual thing.

2. My step-brother and his wife are pregnant. Like they just-got-2-lines pregnant, she hasn't even been to the doctor yet. And they've told EVERYbody. My other step-brothers and their respective significant others (one is married, one is dating) keep joking around about them having a girl. This is funny because there are no girls in the last 4+ generations of this family. (My step-dad has 3 sons, is one of 3 brothers, has only biological uncles and great uncles, etc.) But my step-SIL wants a girl and B usually gets what she wants. The family joked that she would get a girl no matter what, even if it meant trading babies at the hospital. Even if it meant HER MOTHER would have trade babies at the hospital. Ha ha. I hope it doesn't come to that, because I kind of wouldn't put it past her... (I'm kidding.) (Sort of.)

3. The night of Little Man's vaccines this week, he woke at 2am burning up. He responded quickly to Tylenol and then I rocked him for awhile and he went back to sleep. I didn't take his temp, but he was SO hot, poor little man.

4. We're going to the outlet mall this weekend. We're hoping to get new dishes. And I'm hoping to shop at a few other stores, too.

5. My mom got me one of those scrabble tile necklaces for Christmas. I love the ones she wears and I love the ones I've seen on Etsy, but the one she got me says "It is What it is" and I just don't get it. I'm hoping I can find a way to discreetly exchange it, but I don't know where the shop it that she got it from. There is an Etsy address on the packaging, but the Etsy store is empty. I know mom got it from a local shop, though. I'll have to see if she can tell me where she got it.

6. I want this dress from Modcloth. I can't decide why I love it so much. Is it just because it reminds me of something Emma Pillsbury would wear, or if it really is "me?" I've gotten really into the style of Emma lately, but can't afford it. But this dress is affordable. But I can't really wear one-piece dresses much when I'm nursing... so I'm delaying buying it. But I want it.
7. One cute pic of the kids for you.
Hard to believe this was taken a month ago and Little Man has gained a couple of pounds since then and no longer fits in any part of this outfit except the vest.

7 Quick Takes

1. I bought some new jeans this week. They do not have an elastic waistband, they didn't cost a fortune and they look nice on my butt. I will also be able to wear them for more than 3 hours at a time. Postpartum body win! They are also the same numeric size as my pre-pregnancy jeans, so I think they count, right? I'm just a different shape, so I needed a different style.

2. I'm having a minor issue the last few days with Little Man not feeling well. I want him to be awake more during the day/early evening hours, but he fusses so much because he's not feeling well. When I get him calm, he falls asleep. What to do?

3. I've been feeling a little burned out this week. The long days (Daddy Fuss is almost never home until nearly 7 anymore), the sniffly baby boy, Fuss arguing with me about everything throughout the day - it all is hitting me right now. I'm starting to have the dreams that I'm being crushed and the daily afternoon tension headaches. The couple hours of retail therapy I had on Wednesday helped. But the even-later-than-usual night Daddy Fuss spent working that night, took some of the relief away.

4. Had my postpartum appointment on Thursday and all checked out. My Dr's office started giving flu shots and vaccines (Dtap) and it's been at LEAST 12 years since my last vaccine (my Sr year of high school? maybe?) so I went ahead and got the Dtap since they especially recommend the Whooping Cough vaccine for those caring for babies under a year old. (They won't draw your blood at my Dr's office, but they can stab and inject, apparently.)

5. MOPs today! My first meeting. I had to miss the first one of the year on account of just having had a baby. (he was 8 days old) Very excited, though I don't know how I'm going to get all 3 of us up, ready and out the door before 9am. Good thing I live a 5 minute drive from the church. Looking forward to seeing some old friends.

6. At the end of my pregnancy, I was taking almost daily naps when Fuss went down for hers. When the baby first came home, I was doing the same (the old "sleep when the baby sleeps" mantra) but I'm down to only occasional naps now. It just so happens that over the last 3 weeks, I've taken maybe 3 or 4 naps total and 2 of those times, my dad has stopped by to drop things off to me and let himself into the back of the house as he used to when he was working here daily. Which is fine, except that now the back of the house is my bedroom. And I don't usually sleep fully clothed, so I can't just bounce up and say "hey dad! long time no see!" I wonder if he thinks I'm incredibly lazy and I sleep the day away every day?

7. Got a little tipsy Thursday night (planned to feed the baby by pumped milk) and was looking for some of my Luckies friends to chat with ("But they're your friends... not the kind you hang out with, but the kind you type to when you're drunk") online and no one seemed to be around. How disappointing.

7 Quick Takes

1. I've been really struggling this week. I don't know, exactly, what is up, but I am in a perpetually bad mood, I am grumpy, stressed, angry, impatient. I'm hoping I will snap out of it soon, because it seems to be out of my control. About the only thing that isn't ticking me off is my baby boy - he's so sweet and cuddly and yummy. (although, I admit, when he gets to crying for no apparent reason, I get rather frustrated with him/myself for not being able to figure out what to do to make him stop.)

2. You know how in the movies or in books or whatever, a baby always settles down to the mom/special person in his life that is supposed to be his most important person? Yeah. That's not reality. Or I'm not that person, take your pick. Maybe I screw it up, but he doesn't automatically settle when I'm nearby or holding him or whatever.

3. My best friend got a teaching job this week. School started 8 weeks ago (or something - I'm not sure exactly when public schools began around here) and she's been searching for a job since July. I'm happy for her, since it will make sure that she has an income this year and as she and her husband just bought a house this summer, that is very important. But I'm bummed for me, since I was kind of getting used to having her around, being able to pick up and call her any time I wanted, etc. And she was going to babysit Fuss next week while I went to the OB for my follow-up and now she can't, of course. So I'm both happy for her and bummed for me in the process.

4. Thursday night we managed to get the baby down to sleep before 10PM. Unfortunately, this meant that he wanted to wake up much earlier than his usual 4 o'clock hour (2 o'clock hour instead) and then again before 5. I can't decide if it's better to go to bed earlier and wake up twice or go to bed later and wake only once. I'm leaning towards the latter, since I don't like waking during the night (and I consider anything before 6am to be "during the night") any more than I have to. We shall see.

5. We have been having issues w/ our garbage pick up lately. My husband called last week to report yet another missed pick up (I was coming home from an outing and saw the truck drive right past our house. If both kids hadn't been in the car, I would have run after them) and the lady on the phone gave him a hard time, telling him we should have put our cans out the night before. Since they don't pick up until after noon each time, he pointed out that it seemed ridiculous to assume that putting the garbage out 8 hours earlier than he had would have made a difference 8 hours after that. We now have a running joke about the stick on our can changing colors if we put it out before bed to let the garbage men know it was out the night before.

6. The cooler weather we've been having has prompted me to break out pants for the kids. This is at least a minor problem, since Fuss only has 3 pairs of pants and the Little Man doesn't seem to fit in pants at all. His waist is too skinny. Each time I've tried to put him in shorts or such, they fall off of him when I pick him up. I have to keep him in one piece outfits, which is fine in the warmer weather, but... He has 1 pair of pants that fit and one that sort of fits, but I'm going to have to dig in his box to discover if there are more.

7. I've been kneeling on our hard terrazzo floors to work on the flowers in Fuss's new room and I'm afraid I've bruised my knees. They hurt.

7 Quick Postpartum Takes

It feels like it's been awhile since I did 7 Quick Takes. I know it's been a couple of weeks... and right now I'm too lazy to even check...

1. Fuss is still waking in the night, though not every night, and she's usually easy to put back to bed with a simple request (a drink, a hug, tuck me in) and somehow, since we're up and down with the baby anyway, it seems to be less of a pain.

2. Speaking of being up with the baby... he's basically down to waking once in the night w/ a late night before-mommy-goes-to-bed feeding (between 10 and 11). But I have the worst time getting him to go to sleep after he's eaten! Fuss was a "nurse to sleep" baby - all it took was a little mommy milk and she was out! But the Little Man needs to be nursed, then swaddled, sometimes nursed a little bit more (just a few sips, really) and then rocked. And often rocked and rocked and sometimes rocked some more. I was up for nearly 2 hours last night for his feeding and then-some session. Gotta work on that...

3. For the most part, nursing is going better. It's been a rough 2 weeks, I have to say. And it's not exactly easy at this point, but it's certainly getting better. I actually have a much larger post brewing on this subject...

4. I've been out of it for 2 days with a killer headache. It's at least in part hormonal - no meds were touching it - and I think, in part spinal again -and I was simply miserable. No progress on the house has been made since Tuesday, but that's okay. At the end of the day, the kids have been fed and cared for, are alive and happy and I - well, I'm alive.

5. I am having fun dressing my little boy - much more so than I thought I would. I already have a couple of favorite outfits and, oddly, they aren't all the ones I thought they would be. I do remember loving the Carter's "Speedy Exit Creepers" on Fuss for their functionality (plus, they were cute - ruffles on the rear and such) and I love those on him, too (no ruffles for boys, though!) but mostly the little preppy clothes are what are charming me. No shocker there. but he's smaller than Fuss was - the chubby baby thighs are missing (he has thighs, of course, but they aren't nearly as plump as his sisters were) and he can't seem to fill out all his clothes (I put him in a romper the other day and he looked like he was wearing football pads, so big were the shoulders on his little frame. Will be filing that outfit away until he's a bit bigger.) Oddly, he could probably fit those newborn clothes that I basically tossed off to the side... will have to pull some of those out...

6. I am not eating properly. I remember being voraciously hungry when I was nursing Fuss. I didn't always eat healthy, but I ATE. This time around, I seem to have to remind myself to eat most of the time. And sometimes other people have to do so... I tend to get headaches if I forget to eat, so that's a problem.

7. Fuss has been affectionate and sweet with both me and her little brother. She acts out occasionally, trying to get attention, but there is never anything negative directed toward her brother, so that's a relief. But she loves to give me hugs and kisses all day - even more so than she used to. That's a fun benefit!

7 Quick Takes: My Birthday Weekend

1. I have a VERY busy weekend planned. Tonight I am going out for a Girl's Nite with 2 of my girlfriends to celebrate my friend M's birthday earlier this week. (I guess in part, also my birthday, but I'm focusing on her!) We are having dinner at a Japanese Steakhouse and going to a movie. I'm looking forward to it!

2. Tomorrow morning is my second shower. It's a small group of women from church, hosted by my friend Jo. As long as she is feeling better. She was sick earlier this week and I'm hoping she is feeling much better by now!

3. Tomorrow night, Daddy Fuss and I are going out to dinner at Melting Pot. This is a special place for us - usually reserved for our anniversary, though we had to miss that this year, since we were in St. Augustine and there is no Melting Pot in St Augustine. They make my favorite cocktail there, but I'll have to skip it this year, of course!

4. We've turned the weekend into a 3-day weekend, by scheduling my husband off on Monday for my birthday and we're going to have a family day. Possibly the last one of just the 3 of us! I'm hoping to take some pictures of the 3 of us while we're together and I know he's planning to take us to a new Cajun restaurant for lunch. The only thing is... I have no idea what Fuss might eat at a Cajun place... I'm sure we'll find something!

5. Lots of cleaning and organizing going to happen today. Also hoping to get a few minutes to myself to go spend a $25 gift card to CVS that I recently came across. I would like to get some new eye makeup, but that's not an easy thing to do with Fuss in tow!

6. Fuss's 2-yr-old pictures turned out great yesterday! Our photographer friend was training a new photographer in little kid pictures (they do lots of schools/day cares and so experience w/ young children is ideal) and I think the woman needs more practice. She kept waiting for the perfect poses - looking straight at her, hands folded nicely, etc. There were a ton of potentially great pictures that I felt like she missed because she wouldn't just take the pictures that were happening. But there were plenty of great ones, regardless, so I'm not really complaining. There was one that was our friend's favorite that made her look like a preschooler! It was adorable, but I'm not quite ready for her to look that old yet! I'll have to get Daddy Fuss to scan some of the proofs to post...

7. This is my last weekend in my 30's. I know that 30 years old isn't that old, but somehow it feels like leaving childhood behind for good. You're not supposed to be immature and child-like when you're 30. (though I know plenty of people who still are, regardless!)

7 Quick Takes: It's the end of the week!

1. I am still recovering from my experience of working for 3 days this week. I know that it's July and I'm 8 months pregnant, but I'm mildly amused at myself, since I used to do this full-time, often 50 hours a week or more. And we were way busier then (though I also had help back then, too!). I am getting old!

2. My house is being attacked by flying insects. The construction at the back of house seems to have somehow allowed them access to the inside of the house, and I have spent way too much time slapping at house flies. Ugh. We're getting them under control with bug spray, etc. but it's been somewhat ridiculous.

3. Did I mention that we signed up for Netflix recently and are LOVING the streaming-through-the Wii option? Seriously, it has been a life-saver in the Fuss department (they have a great selection of kid-friendly movies and TV shows) and Daddy Fuss and I are enjoying some of the older movies and TV shows available (remember The Commish? Love that Tony Scally!) I think we'd continue it just for the streaming option, but we also get several disks in the mail per month, which is great, too! (since not everything is available streaming through the Wii).

4. I'm going to have to hurry up and choose the exterior colors for my house, since we need to paint the outside of our addition (something I hadn't considered) and I am having SUCH a time making that choice. Cannot believe how difficult it is to pick a nice-looking combination that both Daddy Fuss and I like. Plus, I am not in the outside-of-the-house mindset right now. I am focused on the inside and I am just not ready for this!

5. I really, really, really want a new battery for my laptop. I have all these fanciful thoughts of being able to, you know, MOVE my computer off my desk. Or take it to Panera some evening for a quiet hour or two of writing by myself without little kid TV shows entering my thoughts from the background.

6. My exhaustion this week has delayed my writing, though I have written a little bit and it's all completely new stuff. I have even named a character after one of my internet friends and it's interesting how this originally minor character is coming alive. I hadn't even planned this character into existence, but there she is, in my story. I'm amused.

7. I am so glad to have White Collar back. Neil Caffrey, I have missed you!

7 Quick Takes

1. Got to see my friends' baby last night and she was SO tiny. Fuss was 2 pounds heavier at birth, so I am not used to tiny babies! :) But it was nice to meet her...

2. Despite my best hopes, no forward progress has been made on the new room in the last 2 days - we realized some more complicated demo had to be done on the far wall since it was thrown together by the previous constructors. I still don't have a closed in space and my dad is going out of town for the long weekend (a well-needed vacation for him) so not much will happen this weekend, either! Ah well!

3. I cannot seem to get my house in order. It is starting to drive me bonkers.

4. I'm struggling between wanting the next 9 weeks to fly and wanting them to slow down. I am ready to have this baby, but there is SO much to do between now and then.

5. Going to a 4th of July party at my oldest friend's parents' condo on the beach this weekend. Bringing Fuss this year (we left her with Grandma last year) so I hope she is well-behaved. She's been SUCH a Drama Queen lately.

6. My head plays PBS theme songs in the middle of the night. I miss the days when it was trendy show tunes.

7. Heading to IKEA w/ my mom and Fuss today. I may try out their kids' play area w/ Fuss for the first time. We shall see.

7 Quick Takes: It's been a rough week

1. Fuss has had a difficult week. Bad attitude, contrariness, tantrums, etc. Her afternoon naps have been shorter than they've been over the recent weeks and I don't know if that is a contributing factor (I always let her wake on her own) or if there is some sort of growth or developmental spurt at play and we're going into/coming out of it at this point and so that's what's up. Let's just say that I cannot handle another week like this. I was actually sad to see that today was Friday (and not Saturday) since I feel this week has gone on entirely too long already.

2. I have 2 friends who were due with their babies this week and one popped in the middle of the night last night! Congrats to N! Welcome to the world, little girl!

3. My goal is to be a little more zen in the "could this be preterm labor?" dept. I don't want another trip to the hospital if I can avoid it (until delivery, of course!) so I'm going to stop counting the contractions unless they really HURT. Had one of those yesterday, but since it never reappeared, I'm good to go!

4. I am not sleeping well. I have trouble getting comfortable at all hours of the night, despite daily fatigue, and typically get few than 3 hours of GOOD sleep per night, plus somewhere between 30-60 minutes of a nap during the day. This is not ideal for me.

5. The construction on my house/new room is at a (temporary, I hope) standstill because of an unexpected (sort of) work-related issue my dad has to deal with. I am not thrilled. I am ready to have some walls again. My mom keeps offering her handyman's services (she has a terrific guy who has done a ton of work for her, and I think he's great, but I don't know if we can afford to add his labor costs to the costs of the supplies since that wasn't part of the plan originally). I have actually had a few moments where I wondered if I could go out there and do it myself (but the answer is no. I have no skill w/ a saw)

6. My kitchen is a disaster area. And I have little motivation. I wonder what happened to all that motivation/energy from the past few weeks?

7. I got my first sunburn in awhile. And it was due to my own stupidity. How else would you describe taking my daughter swimming from 11:15-12:15 in a fully-sunny pool and not going ahead and asking my friend to put some sunscreen on my back, even though I thought about it twice? Brilliant. That's me!

7 Quick Takes on My Anniversary

1. Today is my 5 year anniversary. We are headed out of town. Aunt J is staying with Fuss and we are going to enjoy the better part of 2 days without being parents. I am in need of a break and I think, maybe, she is too. Things have been tough this week, for all of us.

2. Today would have been my official due date with Numfar. I don't think about it much, these days, but sometimes the longing is tough. But then, it wouldn't be the baby I am carrying and I know God is in control of all. He has a plan, He knows what could have been and what should be and I can trust Him for that.

3. Yesterday I was BUSY. I had errands to run and didn't quite get all of them done, but I got the most important ones completed, so that is what counts the most!

4. Daddy Fuss is taking my van in for an oil change this morning, since we are past due and we don't want to put the extra miles on it before taking care of it. I am so grateful to him for taking care of these little things, sometimes! It is SO hard to get the van into the shop for a regular oil change with Fuss in tow. We used to just drop off one car, and the other person would pick the driver up and we could go do what we wanted to do. Now that involves switching car seats to a car in which it doesn't really fit very well and that is more trouble than it's worth. So he is sitting in the shop, waiting for them to do the van while I am at home finishing up details like packing.

5. I don't think I'll have the energy to climb the lighthouse this trip. But we may take the tour at the fort. St. Augustine is the oldest city in Florida and it's full of some great historical landmarks. But mostly? I want to relax. And eat. And rest and relax some more.

6. I finally bought a second pair of maternity shorts yesterday. There was no way I was going to survive the summer with only one pair of shorts - eventually they have to go into the laundry and I have officially decided that it is too warm for jeans. This is weird for me, since a few years ago I didn't even OWN any shorts because I hated the way my legs looked. (I still do, but now I feel that my comfort should transcend my vanity.) I would mostly rather wear next-to-nothing, but since that is frowned upon in public (and I REALLY don't look good enough for that - sometimes vanity DOES have to win), I need shorts and tanks. It's unfortunate that maternity clothes have to cost so much, when you only really wear them for a short time (and I wear them as long as possible, trust me), but I had to bite the bullet and just DO IT this time.

7. How did my house get to be such a mess again? It was looking fabulous a week ago. This is going to drive me crazy.

7 Quick Takes

1. I have to renew my driver's license this year (before the end of the summer and my birthday) and I just received a notice that I would have to do so in PERSON and supply a ton of documentation to prove I am who I say I am, instead of taking my current driver's license and just updating it, as they have done in the past. I am not looking forward to this, especially 7+ months pregnant and with a toddler in tow. (I'm hoping my SILs or a friend or something can watch her when I go, but I am afraid it may be more complicated than it needs to be, since I have a shouldn't-be-but-is complicated naming issue that has me with 2 different legal names, one letter apart.) I will be attempting to do this as soon as possible, so that if the complications arise, I have time before my license expires to get it sorted out.

2. The last time this issue came up, I had just gotten married and I was trying to get my married name put on my driver's license. I actually had a woman tell me that my marriage wasn't valid because my name was "misspelled" on my marriage license and that my husband would have to get his marriage annulled and we would need to get remarried. (That was not the case, thank goodness, but I was incredibly upset by it all at the time. It ended up being resolved fairly easily, but there was some emotional trauma at the time.

3. My recliner gets picked up this afternoon! I am psyched! I was able to get the recliner I wanted on sale (the first time it's been even remotely discounted since we started looking at it a several months ago and I am so happy about that!)

4. I am trying to put more thought into my decorating choices these days. I have the opportunity to rearrange and put a little bit of effort and money into my living room, our new bedroom, and Fuss's new big-girl room over the next few months. When we bought the house, I tried to do it all at once and I think I settled a for what I could do and afford at the time, instead of doing it bit by bit with a better idea of what I wanted as the end result. The new furniture (the couch and the recliner) are going a long way to fill in my current situation of mish-mashed furniture (I call the look hand-me-down-garage-sale-chic)

5. I began writing a story this week. I have a very short amount of words written up, based on a thought/dream I had earlier in the week. The problem is, I have no character names as of yet, and I have no ending in mind at all. And it's a little depressing. So I may scrap it and start something else. I think it could be really good, though, if I can pull it together, so I'm going to save what I've got and hopefully come back to it some day, if I don't come up with characters/an ending for it soon.

6. I've been battling headaches this week. Again. Ugh.

7. Fuss threw a fit yesterday when she was supposed to be napping and ended up with no nap at all. I put her to bed early and we skipped Mother/Daughter movie night and she went to bed at a reasonable time instead of later than usual which we do on a Thursday night so that Daddy Fuss can see her before bed on his Bible Study nights.

7 Quick Takes

1. Burn Notice. Love it.

2. I am feeling a little screwy these days - emotionally, mentally, whatever. I'm minorly concerned for what this means for my mental state after the baby comes. But maybe I'm just being weirdly emotional/hormonal now when I think that way.

3. Had a discussion w/ my husband tonight about how I am craving him being home all the time. He wanted to know how we find a balance between his needs to have occasional Man Time and my need to have him around. I felt like laughing. When do I get to have Girl Time that doesn't include my child(ren)? Obviously I am not expecting to actually get away from the child in utero, but geez.

4. I haven't had a night out with an adult female since October. I can tell you he has had weekly meetings for a Bible study for the past 6 weeks and several weekend outings (afternoons or evenings) with friends at least 4 times that I can think of off the top of my head in addition to that in the last 3 months. I did get a couple of hours w/ my mom a few weeks ago, which was a fun time, but it was marred by my dental appointment at the end.

5. Our couch is being delivered today! I am psyched!

6. My dogs seem to be objecting to spending so much time in the open sun room. They hang out out there when we're not home and when they are eating. They have liked the activity and the freedom when my dad is here in the afternoons (they get to go out to the back yard then) but they are whinier than usual when I put them out to eat and don't get them immediately, instead of just laying down for a nap. Guess I should go get them...

7. Trey has been SO active this morning - kicking and rolling and moving around. It's so fun to feel him moving (at least when I'm not trying to sleep!) but he tends to spend all his time on my right side - I rarely feel him on my left.

7 Quick Takes: The End of an Era

1. Today is/was my last day working at my dad's store. "My" location is closing tomorrow.

2. Twenty-two years ago, I was 8 years old and my best friend, Katie, and I hung out eating Taco Bell (as always) in the coin laundry next door, which my parents bought in conjunction with the dry cleaners. (We subsequently sold the coin laundry a couple years later and bricked up the windows and doors so that the two properties were officially separated. But in the meantime, it was a good place for a little kid or two to hang out and be out of the way, but still in view of the parents!)

3. By the time I was 9 and tall enough to reach the rails, I was allowed to occasionally work with my mom and earn a little money.

4. One summer, Katie and I dressed up in southern belle ball gowns several mornings a week (early in the day - it was HOT in those dresses, especially in the Florida summer heat!) and held a sign advertising the store and waved at the passing cars. We made $2 an hour.

5. By the time I was 12, I had regular hours there - working some Friday nights or Saturday afternoons. Katie usually worked the other shift.

6. It was where my sister and I really, truly became friends. It was also where I fell in love with my nephew when she started working part-time and bringing him with her. She was the first of us to bring the baby to work (followed by my friend Kris and eventually myself). We all had silly dreams of the kids growing up to have their first jobs there when they were old enough.

7. There are a bunch of my friends (old and current) who have had jobs there over the years, including the girls I mentioned above (Katie, Kris, and my sister), my husband, my first boyfriend, my friends Cara, Tammy, Lindsey, Nerissa, Margie, David W, Candice, and I'm probably forgetting some of them, but that's all I've got in memory right now. It holds a huge chunk of my childhood memories, my personal history, and a lot of hours of my time for the last 22 years. I will miss it and I will miss what it represents in my life.

7 Quick Takes

1. I'm taking fewer naps during the day to attempt to help me sleep better at night. Unfortunately, I am peeing incredibly frequently through every night, so I wake a lot anyhow and now my sleep has been peppered with bad dreams. Maybe I should go back to napping after all...

2. I feel like my legs are getting bigger. I don't remember that with my first pregnancy until the very end when my feet would swell a bit. But this is an overall, "bigness" and I don't like it one bit. I never felt I had the greatest looking legs anyway, but adding weight to them makes me feel more akin to the Stay-Puff Marshmallow Man.

3. My boobs are bigger, too. And I cannot stand the D-cup underwires (they always seem to be WAY too high on the sides), so I've been asking my girlfriends for recommendations. Almost entirely, they recommended Bravado brand bras, so I'm hoping to get one to try out soon.

4. I am getting so burned out lately, and I don't really understand it very well, since Fuss has been (overall) very well behaved of late. But I am tired. And spent. And I need a break.

5. My job is ending at the end of the month. My dad is closing the store I work at, and I am unable to transfer to another for my own reasons (schedule - I can't work evenings, and health - I refuse to work at the hottest store in the middle of summer when I am 6-9 months pregnant, not to mention that I can't take Fuss with me there for safety reasons), so my income will be scaled down, and I will suddenly have more time on my hands! This may end up being a really good thing.

6. I am in project mode, but don't know where to begin and have limited energy. I want to clean the bathroom, move on our sunroom conversion, clean out the garage, etc. And I'm sure it's partly hormonal and nesting, but it's also a reaction to what I am seeing while dealing with my MIL's issues/house. I cannot let myself get to that point.

7. And for lack of a better 7th thing, my dogs are both incredibly in need of a bath and I have no idea when they are going to get it.

7 Very Random Quick Takes

1. Tomorrow is Gma's funeral and most of her offspring will be in attendance. She had (and was very proud of this) 3 children (all married, one spouse deceased), 12 grandchildren (most married), and 11 great-grandchildren - with one on the way! Most of them will be at my house tonight for a big family dinner, which is why I've been away from my computer most of the week - I've been cleaning!

2. My MIL and I are puzzled by the food gifts given to us by her co-workers. Much of what was brought is your usual stuff - cakes and pastries, casseroles, etc. Someone, however, saw fit to provide us with 3 dozen eggs and 2 pounds of bacon, uncooked, of course. We're assuming they had breakfast on their mind and are of the opinion that it's the thought that counts. The supplies won't go to waste, of course, but it seemed random to us.

3. My daughter is absolutely adoring having her same-age cousin, J in town. They have become the best of friends over the last week and she is going to be heartbroken when J and her family return to NC on Sunday. I always wanted her to be friends with her cousins and I'm sorry that they live so far away and we don't get together very often, especially after seeing this.

4. My own cousin (age 17) was recently sent to a Christian "fresh start" boarding school in GA after telling a bus load of classmates that she had been sneaking out of the house at night to go see her boyfriend (and a lot of other things, but this was apparently the last straw for my uncle). When my Gramma asked her "what were you thinking?" K answered, "we were having sex." (I'm not sure I would have been so bold in front of Gramma, and I'm nearly 30 and married with a kid and one on the way. My Gramma isn't a prude, but geez.) I'm feeling a little guilty about not keeping in better contact with her when we are apart, since I know she desperately needs a good, positive female roll-model in her life that she can relate to. (My Gramma is a wonderful woman, who is a great roll-model, but K and she don't relate well. At all.)

5. Fuss's sleep schedule has been so crazy this week that I am afraid that when things return to normal this coming week, she is in for a rude awakening. She's been staying up late and sleeping in, and still taking fairly good naps, but the schedule is all out of whack. And my girl is a schedule-oriented kid. So this is going to be fun...

6. I had my April OB appointment this week and they had trouble locating the HB on the dopplar. When they popped me in for a quickie ultrasound, we discovered that the placenta is all out in front (it looks like a large sweet potato on the u/s pic) and confirmed why I'm not feeling a lot of movement in the middle (I feel occasional flutters, but they seem high) and why we had trouble with the dopplar. My BIG u/s (the anatomy u/s) is scheduled for just 2 weeks away, on April 15th! Daddy Fuss will be taking at least a half day off to go with me and I am SO excited I can't stand it.

7. I should really get off the computer and finish the picking up and cleaning that I have yet to do, but both human members of my family are napping (plus one dog) and I don't want to disturb them.

Quick! Takes!

1. This no TV thing is both easier and harder than I thought it would be. When there isn't something on that I specifically want to watch (which, I admit, can sometimes be reruns of my favorite shows that I already have somewhat memorized) it's no big thing. The 12-5 hours in the afternoon? No biggie to leave the TV off. But in the evenings when my prime time shows are on? Frustrating. When I want a quick weather report before getting dressed at 6am? Problem. When I want to unwind in the evening with the lights off, snuggled next to my man and watch a movie? Grrr.

2. Really looking forward to getting back to my old, faithful chiropractor this afternoon. It's been 7 months. I miss him. And my back? it misses him even more.

3. It is driving me crazy to not know the gender of this kid inside me. I am really gearing up for the planning stages and I feel (whether this is logical or accurate or not) like I can't do any of the planning until I know. I can't go through the old clothes to sort what I'm going to give to my girlfriends who are having girls this time around and I can't start my registry and I don't know why it's bugging me so much, but it is!

4. My dad is coming over on Sunday to check out the garage so we can start planning it's conversion into a new bedroom. Yay!

5. Have I mentioned my desire for a new couch? I really hate the one I've got and I picked out a really reasonably priced one a couple of weeks ago. We're hoping to come up with a couple hundred extra dollars so we can buy it soon. I'm hoping by the next random-bank-holiday-furniture-sale weekend.

6. I also want a new recliner for when the baby comes. Something I can sleep in with him/her in my arms if needed. We got rid of the futon that was in Fuss's room when she first came home, which was the only available option for us to lay on and hold her if we wanted to give the other person a few hours of uninterrupted sleep. Now we have nothing of the sort.

7. WHy is my daughter crying when she only went down for her nap 30 minutes ago?

Friday, March 12, 2010

7 Quick Takes

1. I'm watching Grey's Anatomy for the 2nd time in awhile (Daddy Fuss and I have stopped watching any primetime shows that we don't both enjoy, so this was one of the casualties. Though he can stand it, it's not really one he enjoys) and I'm enjoying having sole-possession of the remote control, though I'd gladly give it up to have him home tonight. (It was just as well that he couldn't get a flight home tonight, as they apparently closed the airport due to thunderstorms or some such.) I am looking forward to his arrival tomorrow. (but WHAT is up with blonde Lexie? I really prefer the brunette)

2. MOPs is tomorrow and while I'm not a huge fan of one of the speakers scheduled, I am so excited to get back this month! I missed it last month when Fuss was sick. And I am so glad things are looking better this month, so far!!! I will also be officially announcing my pregnancy to them this month, so that's another happy thought.

3. I found my favorite Easter candies on sale at Target this week and got a few more. Cadburry creme eggs and pink bunny Peeps. Ah, I love Easter.

4. It's driving me crazy that I don't yet know the gender of this new baby because I am so ready to start shopping. Someone recommended this great diaper bag from Land's End, but it comes in either pink or blue or this ugly khaki color, so I'm gonna have to get it gender specific. I also am struggling with finding cute boy clothes I like so on the rare occasion that I find something, I want to buy it just in case and I can't because I don't know if it's really what I need! And I don't know any of my IRL girlfriends who are having boys (everybody I know IRL is having a girl!) so I don't even have anybody to pass it on to in case I buy it and can't use it!

5. Fuss was really well behaved today and I am so glad. She had a ton of energy and was so friendly and happy overall, but I only had to threaten her with discipline once or twice and never had to follow through because she didn't obey. Yay!

6. We're going to have to take a step toward potty training soon. Her voluntary interest seems to have waned, so we're going to try some motivation and a weekend of taking her to sit on the potty every 20 minutes coming up soon. I'm not sure I'm ready for it (it seems like so much work!) but I know that if it works it will SO be worth it.

7. I have so much laundry to fold and I'm sitting here watching TV and blogging instead. Ah well.
