We had a scheduled induction at 39 weeks. In addition to 9/2 being the exact date of my 39 week point, it was also my grandfather's birth date (he is deceased, but is still one of the best men I've ever known) and I thought it would be cool to have his great-grandson born on his birthday.
We had been told to check in by 5am (my midwife joked that we could show up early, but not late, so we made sure we had plenty of time, even at that low-traffic time of morning) and arrived at the hospital at 4:45am. The valet parking attendant was not on duty yet, so we cheated and parked in the ER parking lot next door and walked over to The Baby Place.
The security guard was very nice (apparently, the others on duty during our stay were not all so friendly or helpful) and we went right up after Daddy Fuss getting his name tag (I wasn't issued one, since my pregnant state allowed me to be identifiable enough, and I would soon be wrist-banded as a patient). While we were in fact early, they were not ready for us - they had been unexpectedly busy the night before (a fact that would be evident later in the day) and didn't have any clean rooms yet. So we waited. For about half an hour. No biggie, since I wasn't in active labor (though, ironically, I had about 4 fairly uncomfortable/strong contractions in the 30-minutes it took us to drive to the hospital - eveidence that my body was getting ready on it's own - induction or not!) but I would have felt bad for someone in labor waiting around for a room like that!
We got into our room and it still took awhile to get a nurse to stop in (my husband had to track one down to find out if I needed to pee in a cup or not) but she finally came by (and apologized for making me wait) and we did the paperwork, etc. and then she began to attempt to get my IV started. I mentioned that I was going to be a little picky about the placement, since I'd had a bad experience with the one I had when Fuss was born (it was in the side of my wrist and I couldn't bend my hand all day - especially annoying when I needed to boost myself into place in the hospital bed both before and after the epidural was put in). She said that was understandable and began to fish around for a vein. She blew the first attempt and had to bandage that one up pretty quickly. Her second attempt was so incredibly painful (burning that just kept getting worse and worse and she wasn't having any luck anyway) so we tried again elsewhere. She missed her 3rd attempt, as well and called in another nurse to try. And another. And another. I was stuck 6 times (I looked like a car accident victim - I had blood and bandages all over my arms. My husband's Facebook status was the picture of my damaged arms and a request for 2 of our friends - a nurse anesthetist and a paramedic - to come down and show them how to start an IV) and they finally got it - not in the most ideal place, obviously, but at least it wasn't incredibly uncomfortable like it was when I had Fuss. My Pitocin was finally begun just after 7am.
My day nurse came on around then - I can't remember who actually started the drugs. I loved my day nurse - she was terrific. I started responding to the drugs pretty quickly and I must have been wussier this time around, because I was seriously feeling the pain/discomfort even before my water was broken and I ordered my epidural before that happened (both the nurse and midwife had encouraged me to order it before I HAD to have it, since it takes time to get the fluids and get the anesthesiologist in, etc.). Around 9 my midwife came in and broke my water. It started gushing and kept coming. My midwife, Lucy, was even surprised by the seemingly neverending flow. She saw how much kept coming and said "wow" and nothing ever seems to surprise Lucy. They had to change my bed pads twice before she left to go back to the office.
The nurse anesthetist came in a little later to do my epi. My hospital kicks out the family so my mom and Daddy Fuss went to grab some breakfast. I have few complaints about this experience. My 2 minor complaints were a) she had to put the numbing agent in twice (she described it as "like novacaine in the dentist office" and it burned like all get out) and b) the pathetic excuse of a hospital bed pillow that the nurse gave me to hug while I was leaning over into the position the anesthetist needed me in to put in the needle.
It took a few minutes to kick in, which she said was normal. It was a very different experience from when Fuss was born. With her, I felt NOTHING after the epidural had kicked in. This time I could feel the pressure and intensity of the contractions, but not the pain. Since the pain was the biggest issue, it was fine, but a little weird. I was able to rest for a little under an hour and when I woke up, my mom was watching the contraction monitor. She informed me that the contractions were coming faster now - 1-2 minutes apart. We set up the DVD player we brought and turned on episodes of Veronica Mars. It turns out my nurse was a big fan of Veronica, too and she enjoyed talking to me about it when she'd come in to check on me.
I don't remember how long or in what order things happened exactly, but some other nurse came in to check me and told me I was 7 cm. Shortly after that, I started to really feel the contractions - I had to breathe through them and it reminded me of the hard labor pains I felt when in labor with Fuss. Wow. They were strong. Was confident I was glad I had the epidural at that point. I guess this is what they referred to as transition - I don't remember it at all with Fuss, since I wasn't feeling anything then. It just happened SO fast. I wasn't watching the clock or anything, but I swear, from the "you're 7cm" point to "okay, let's push" was like 10 minutes. My mom told me to change positions while I was dealing with the pain, because she noticed the baby's heart rate was going down. A few minutes later the nurses came in and basically said the same thing and gave me an oxygen mask to up my oxygen level. They called Lucy, who was on her way over anyway since it was lunch time and she wanted to check in. I started feeling all this pressure and she told me that I'd need to let her know when I was feeling the next one and we'd push. She had me lay on my right side while breathing the oxygen. She got a call from one of her partners about then and he must have asked how things were going ("we're about to start pushing") and then if there was any food around the office. Just about then, I was really feeling the contraction, so I rolled back onto my back and she abruptly told him no and hung up on him. She and my nurses and Daddy Fuss coached me through some pushes. I felt awful. Holding my breath and trying to push was REALLY hard. And I felt it all. And I couldn't seem to catch my breath in between pushes.
Daddy Fuss had to sit down at one point (he gets queasy in medical type situations) and Lucy told him she'd just step over him if he went down. I was glad he sat when he needed to, because I'm afraid I would have freaked out if he had actually passed out. The student nurse in the room took over holding my leg for him. My mom had my other side. There was also a special forces soldier in the room getting some observational training by shadowing Lucy (she had asked my permission to have him in the room earlier and I said "why not?" I barely noticed him until it was over and she was showing him how to feel my belly to make sure it was all passed.) but I don't really remember much but trying to catch my breath and suddenly having some nasal congestion (random!) and not being able to breathe well in between pushes. They had me roll back to my side and wear the oxygen mask in between contractions. I pushed for about 20 minutes. I felt him crown (I have always been terrified of the concept of "the ring of fire" and I am especially glad that I had my epidural, but there was a great feeling of relief when his head came out. Another couple of pushes and I suddenly felt a HUGE release/relief and he was out. Time of birth, 12:40PM. The first thing Lucy said about him was "He's a Moose!" which was hilarious since my husband and my mom and I all have this weird thing for moose and we call each other "moose" all the time and there was a running joke about this baby coming out with antlers.
They put him directly on my chest and wiped him off from there. I am always shocked by how purple babies come out. Fuss was the same way. They had to suction a bunch of mucus out of him, but he started to cry and yell. He was beautiful.
He hung out on my chest for awhile. I tried to get him to latch since all the books talk about the first hour and how they'll latch right away if given the opportunity. He played with my nipple a bit, but didn't seem to want to suck.
Lucy and the soldier helped me deliver my placenta ("you're gonna feel a big relief when this is done!" she said. Lucy is always right.) and other than the major pain/discomfort when they began to press on my belly, the worst of it was over. I got a tear of some sort - she said it wasn't exactly a tear from delivery, and I can't remember how she described it, but it's almost like a tear from strain. It's a 1st degree tear and I have 6 stitches, which she said she didn't HAVE to stitch, but I'd be more comfortable ultimately if she did, otherwise I'd be "flapping in the breeze." So she sewed me up.
I cuddled with my baby for a couple of hours. The nursery worker came in and weighed him (8 lbs, 6 oz, 20.5" long 9/9 on Apgar) and did all that stuff. Then the lactation consultant came in and we worked on getting him latched. He eventually did and began eating. I sent my husband to the cafeteria to get me some lunch and someone brought me some cranberry juice (OMG was it GOOD!) When he was really eating well, I started to feel funny. The contractions from the nursing were awful. I wasn't moving - was in fact still reclining in bed - but I started to feel SO dizzy. I mentioned it to my mom and the LC and they called in the nurse. She hooked me up to the BP monitor and started to take my BP and I started to feel even worse. They kept asking me if I wanted them to take the baby, but he was eating and didn't seem to be bothered by my problem, so I kept him. My vision was starting to fade a little, and there was lots of air-sounds in my ears and my mom said afterwards that my speech was slurring a bit. My BP got down to 89/60, which is even low for me.
I started to feel a little better. They gave me some fluids, but that started the contractions a little more intensely, and the dizzy feeling came back. My mom asked if they could turn off the fluids again, and they debated the cause. The nurse tried to get me to pee in a bedpan, thinking that that may help, but I couldn't feel enough down there to do it, so she had to cath me. I filled up the cath and the bedpan with more than 800 ccs of fluid (a lot by any measure, apparently) and I started to feel better again. Just after my bladder was emptied, I passed a huge clot - it filled the nurse's hand. It was creepy.
They continued to monitor my BP all afternoon. The Mother/Baby unit was full and it took more than 8 hours for me to get a room. I ordered my dinner and was hoping it would have to get sent to my new room, but alas, no. I was still there. My husband and my MIL went to the cafeteria to get some dinner for him, too. My SIL, J, and I were hanging out with the baby when one of the nurses who couldn't get my IV started that morning came in. She had been the roughest and most abrupt of all of them. She actually walked into my room this time introducing herself as "the nurse who couldn't get your IV started this morning." I was hoping that since she seemed to be joking around now, that maybe she was going to be more friendly. So I quipped "well, there was a list of people, so..." she then bossed J and I around to get us moved to the other unit. She was practically throwing the baby around and I was very happy that she let me hold him on the way to the Mother/Baby unit instead of just tossing him over her shoulder or something. I was quietly praying that she wasn't my night nurse!
We were finally brought into our room, the rude nurse hung out and hooked up the baby's security anklet (and she did it WRONG) when he was frustrated cause he was hungry. But she wasn't my night nurse, so it all worked out.
He loves to sleep. In contrast to Fuss who liked to eat as much as she liked to sleep and didn't discover that she liked to sleep until the next day. This little man wants to sleep more than anything.
He's handsome and sweet, though. And it looks like he might be a redhead. His eyes are a dark, rich, blue. He's so cuddly. He loves to be held.
Sometimes I can't believe I have a son. And he's got my heart.

Almost there
My OB appt yesterday revealed 2.5cm, 80% effaced, a cervix "like mush" and the baby's head "Very, very low." She estimates we will have a baby by lunch time on Thursday. She thinks it will be very fast and easy. Of course, she may just be telling me that to boost my confidence, but I'll take it! :)
I have some stuff to do today - and I know not everything is going to get done before we leave for the hospital in the morning, and I'm currently feeling okay with that. My mom called this morning and was giving me grief about the schedule for the move into the new room. My dad told me last night that he didn't want any furniture moved in tonight, he wanted those extra couple of days that I'll be in the hospital to finish some stuff and the furniture would be in the way. My mom is impatient and wants everything perfect to set up while we're in the hospital. I understand that she wants to be all "HGTV" and everything, but this is real life, not a TV show.
She then suggested that we just wait until the following week (more than 10 days later) when she is taking time off to help me with the baby and Fuss. She doesn't want to put up the curtains until the furniture is in there "because they need to be cut off and you can't do that until the furniture is in" - I'm at the point where I want to move in as soon as logically possible and I'll hang dark sheets on the windows if she'll just put up the hardware, if that's what it takes. Grrrrr. I'm frustrated. I kept telling her I wasn't going to stress over it and she kept telling me she didn't want me to stress over it and then putting more pressure to get it done to her schedule...
I am one day away from delivering my son. I am incredibly excited. I can't wait to meet him!

Migraine and Decor
Migraines while pregnant are a special kind of torture.
I spent Sunday in an extraordinary amount of pain. I woke w/ a headache at 4am. It continued by rebounding all day long, despite the medication I took (all Dr approved) and the rest I acquired. After cooking dinner I ended up having either really short, but awful contractions or really intense punches and kicks from the baby - they hurt so much but were very short, so I didn't have the time or concentration to analyze them.
My in-laws (MIL, LP and J) came over and finished painting my current bedroom for the conversion to Fuss's room. Since there was only 2 rollers, they took turns doing the painting and doing little things around my house for me, which was so sweet. My dad and Daddy Fuss spent the day laying tile in our new bedroom. The grout will be done Monday, but the tile is all in and it looks fabulous! I am so excited about how beautiful it looks.
My mom and her friend picked out some bedding and those type of accessories for us and they want to surprise us while we're in the hospital. My mom called me up saying "If Candice Olson were to come into your house, would you let her do whatever she wanted?" Now, I like Candice Olson, though our tastes are not always the same (Candice tends to go a little more modern than my personal tastes, but regardless, she's brilliant with design) and the answer to the question is yes, however, with Candice I know what I'm getting, so I don't know that the same goes for my mom - but I'm not sure how to tell her that...
But, by her description I'll probably like it and she promised to keep the receipts in case we don't.

7 Quick Takes - late in the day
1. Have recently (today) discovered that I am completely uninterested in reading parenting books at this time. I devoured them when I was pregnant with Fuss, but now cannot seem to get motivated to read more than a few chapters of any parenting-related book and even those few chapters are feeling forced. I know I don't know everything, I know I need to brush up on some stuff, but the information is depressing me instead of making me look forward to it.
2. My mom and her best friend came over today to look at our new room to give me what I thought was decorating ideas. Instead they started with criticizing our planned furniture layout and moved on to trying to change my mind about nearly every other choice I had already decided on/was non-negotiable. While they were discussing it, I snuck off to my bedroom where my husband was trying to work from home and asked "was this a mistake to let them help with this?" I had been SO excited for some input... and now I'm panicking that they are going to just DO something (spend money on stuff) and I'm going to not like it.
3. Apparently, I'm feeling very negative today. Who knew? I was in a good mood earlier, I thought...
4. The blue color on my new bedroom walls is amazing. Amazing. And Daddy Fuss said that they type of paint we used was awesome. It was pricey, but he said it was so worth it. If you're in the market for some awesome interior paint, I highly recommend Duration by Sherwin-Williams. Seriously good stuff.
5. We introduced Fuss to her first viewing of Peter Pan today. She loved it. I think Dumbo might still be her current favorite, but Peter Pan was a big hit. I actually took some time away from my computer and my chores to watch it with her. She was transfixed.
6. My mom and her friend were insisting that I should be sitting on piles of beach towels or something instead of my new furniture in case my water spontaneously breaks with no warning. I'm not worried. The chances of that happening are very slim, though my mom's friend swears it happened to her daughter w/ her first pregnancy. I think it's more likely that said daughter had been having contractions and didn't realize it and then her water broke - this isn't the movies after all. I know that it sometimes happens, but seriously?
7. We had a 45-minute torrential downpour this afternoon and the street in front of my house resembles a small river. My husband suggested we might want to get floor insurance. Oh boy.

38 Weeks - Why this Thursday Sucks
The internet has been spotty at best for the last 24 hours. I even spent 20 minutes on the phone this morning getting it reset and losing it again an hour later...
This morning my gag reflex kicked in again. Smells were driving me crazy. I had to stop 3 times while trying to empty the diaper pail (and actually threw up once during that time - made it to the bathroom, thank goodness). The smell of the texturizing stuff in the new room was getting to me, too and I had to go in and out of there to do the laundry.
I did a ton of laundry, but was trying to fold it while sitting on my bed and watching TV that wasn't geared toward preschoolers instead of in my living room. It was murder on my already swollen feet/toes. I did however, get a lot done!
On my way to the tile store to pick up the tile for the new room, my van overheated and I was stuck in an area that had no place to pull over or place like a gas station that would make sense to stop at (or hardly any parking lots at all). When I got ahold of my husband, I made a wrong turn and ended up missing the turn off for the gas station he suggested. I ended up in the parking lot of the local shooting range. Fuss and I had to wait in the heat for nearly 30 minutes for my husband to reach us with some coolant to refill the resevoir. It worked, thank goodness, but it was kind of rough.
I started having some painful contractions on the way to the tile store. I didn't think anything of it at the time, because Fuss was driving me crazy. My head started to ache and my belly hurt, so I was much more focused on that.
The 3 of us went into the tile store where Fuss absolutely would not listen, but we were able to get what we needed anyhow. But it was heavy, so I couldn't help, of course, and then Fuss threw a tantrum when I wouldn't swing her around as we were leaving. It was difficult to load it all into my van, so we had to put some in my husbands car and he was sweating like crazy by the time he was done. I was still not feeling well and Fuss was cranky and hungry. By that time, Daddy Fuss's lunch break was over, so he had to go back to the office and couldn't join us for lunch.
I started having more painful contractions as I was looking for a Taco Bell for lunch. The food was good, but I kept spilling it while I was trying to eat in the car. It ended up all over my shirt, of course. I then noticed that I was having hard contractions every 10 minutes. Still driving, still more than 20 minutes from home. I was trying to breathe through the contractions on my own and calm Fuss down (she wanted my food after she had eaten all of her own).
I had 2 more contractions once we got home, and I set Fuss up in front of a video. My head began to hurt even more, which was less fun. And the internet was down AGAIN. But eventually, the contractions stopped/slowed, so that was good.

To Do
My current list of things that still need to/should get done before the baby arrives:
1. Raise crib mattress. Clean sheet currently on it and replace with one not as girly.
2. Clean out van.
3. Locate and install infant carseat. This will involve some rearranging of the van bench seats, I believe.
4. Find some place to put the bin of 0-3 month boy clothes that is at least accessible. (Right now it's in the nursery closet, underneath several other items)
5. Rearrange diaper drawer to accommodate newborn diapers along w/ Fuss's size 4s. (Find new place for unused toddler panties, since she has even less interest now than she did 6 months ago)
6. Make a few purchases to complete the have-tos. (Waiting, at least in part, for the 10% off registry completion coupon... where is it?) Need: New pump parts, breast pads, at least one more blanket
7. Decide what to do about nursing cover. Was given one I don't think I like. Really want one from Simply Sweet Baby Boutique.
8. Take back Huggies Wipes (shower gift) that irritate Fuss's bottom and replace w/ generics.
9. Spend some quality cuddle-time with my best girl. Cookies and Disney movies may be involved. Pink sparkly nail polish, too.
10. Back adjusted by chiropractor.

37 weeks: Full Term
My feet have taken on the appearance of marshmallows. My toes swell periodically, as do my fingers. (the fingers are always a little chubby, but sometimes they get so full, it hurts to make a fist. this is the most annoying part of the swelling. That and the ugly shoes I had to buy so I could leave my house occasionally.) I got some info from my midwife about the fluctuations in my blood pressure, and I'm still good, despite the rise in my upper number of late. She did suggest staying off my feet more often (ha!) to help ease it a bit, but there isn't much we can do at this point.
At my appointment this week, I was 1cm dilated, and 50% effaced. The baby's head is down and he is apparently "snuggling" with my spine, which contributes to the back pain, extensively. Yay.
We are officially on the schedule for induction for 9/2. I check into the hospital at 5am. This was expected and my SIL, LP is planning to spend the night the night before, so we have no worries about Fuss's care (and so she doesn't have to wake up at 4am to come over here and take over!)
Our renovation/construction is moving along, too! The inside wall has been painted and I am able to start to get full use of my great room back again. There is much rejoicing! The room itself got it's windows and doors mudded this week (they look so nice!) and my dad is continuing the mudding process this week. He still has to install the air conditioner, but then we're ready to paint out there, too! The floor will be last and I need to do a little research on which floor we're using. (My mom had 2.5 boxes of laminate left over from her own project recently, and if I can match it easily and cost-effectively, we will use that. If not, we have to pick out our flooring still.) We also have to pick out the tiles for the small tile pathway we will be doing from door to door.
Fuss has her 2 yr old photos today (so, she's 2 1/2 already, sue me! No seriously, a photographer friend of ours is taking the pictures and he's been very busy this year!) Looking forward to some fun!
I can't believe my baby boy will be here in 2 weeks!!

Sunday
Oh my goodness, my hands and feet are swollen. My fingers feel tight, my feet feel heavy and warm. I am so ready to be done with this!
Lots of work got done today at the house. But I have been feeling kind of miserable and now I'm feeling like a blob. These intense lower back pains have been hitting me hard off and on for 2 days and right now I'm feeling nauseated, plus this swelling... I'm a very unhappy pregnant lady.
This must just be one of those moments you have to deal with during pregnancy, I guess. I remember being "over it" at the very end of my pregnancy w/ Fuss, but I don't clearly remember being this miserable. I'm blaming the heat... these miserable hot days where my AC doesn't work well and I can't get cool and comfy... just makes everything seem worse, I think!
I succeeded in packing away a bunch of maternity clothes I won't be needing/wanting again until my next pregnancy. We can now get that bin out of the way in our bedroom! I had Daddy Fuss hang the curtains we bought for Fuss's new room (which aren't nearly as wonderful as advertised, so I'll likely be taking them back. I am bummed!) and I got some more stuff of hers put away and organized.

7 Quick Takes
1. I'm so sick of watching Clifford's Really Big Movie or whatever it is called. Honestly, it's better than some of the movies she wants to watch all the time (have you seen the Care Bears movies of this era? Awful.) But seriously. It's her favorite lately. I think I watch it daily. But I have to say that every time Clifford says good-bye to Emily Elizabeth, my heart breaks.
2. I finally have cankles. My husband had to undo the middle strap on my Birkenstocks last night so that I could wear them (which is apparently driving Fuss bonkers - she doesn't like my straps flapping around...) My toes look like little sausages and they are so puffy I can't bend them all the way.
3. Saturday is my annual Mother/Daughter make over and pedi day for my birthday (which is more than a week away, but the timing wasn't working out, so it's this week.) I am very much looking forward to it. But I hope I can walk through the mall okay. Suddenly glad we decided to do it early rather than late - I can't imagine trying to do it 2 weeks later...
4. The painting on the inside of our great room begins this weekend. I'm psyched. Once that is done, we can move furniture back into place and I can get at least part of my house back in order!
5. I need chocolate.
6. I was telling a friend about the EPCOT Food & Wine Festival at Disney World and I am really hoping that we are going to be able to go this year. I am really missing wine lately, anyway.
7. Someone mentioned this shirt on Twitter the other day and I want it for postpartum time. So cute, and some great functionality for nursing!

36 Weeks
Three weeks from today, I will be in the hospital, having my baby. Wow.
I am both terrified and excited beyond words.
The terror is the usual stuff, of course, coupled with the stress of the house situation. I think the thing I'm most worried about with labor itself is my expectations. You see, I went into my first labor with basically none. I tried to write up a birth plan, but realized that I had no frame of reference for what I would want/need and so I just went with the flow. (The nurses were probably big fans - especially since I didn't end up having a dedicated L&D nurse... very weird situation.) I ended up having a very reasonable time of it all. Especially after all the horror stories you hear about Pitocin. But I know that while logically there is no guarantee that things will go the same, in the back of my mind, I expect that it WILL all be the same and that I know what to expect, etc. Also, I'm not really looking forward to that whole intense, heavy labor pains thing... but then, who does?
And what on earth do I do with a boy? He has different parts! And I can't put him in ruffles! We still have to decide whether to, ahem, circumsize or not...
There is a good chance that things will be fine with the house - or at least that the main room will be back to normal long before then and things can start to feel a little more normal... But it's looking like the room might be complete enough to have us move in and we can actually have it all ready for the baby when he comes home. Wouldn't it be lover-ly?
The excitement is, of course, somewhat obvious, too. I'm having a much longed for baby! He'll be the first grandson on both sides, the first nephew, and obviously, the first SON for Daddy Fuss and I! I'm looking forward to having him in my arms.
My feet were very thick Wednesday morning - even putting on my Birkenstocks was a challenge! I'm not sleeping well (punctuated by Fuss's nighttime wakings) and it's hard to find comfortable positions at any time. The Braxton Hicks are occurring frequently enough that they are driving me nuts, but irregular enough that I know I'm not in labor. I have the occasional one that is painful enough that I am convinced that it is productive, at least!
So, nervous and excited. Big surprise, right?

What's my name, Mom?
I keep catching myself referring to the new baby as "the baby" - he has a name, and I like it, etc. but somehow, I still refer to him as "the baby" more often than not. Sometimes I call him "little boy" or "little man" but mostly he is "the baby." I know I called Fuss by her name a lot pre-birth, so I don't really know what my hang up is.
He's real to me - I don't think that is the problem. Although, even Fuss was in some way only an idea before she was actually born. (I think that's normal in some way for every mom, though). I'm very much looking forward to having him in my arms - more now than I was months ago... I can't wait to see him, to meet him, to get to know him...
I'm working on it now, I guess. I am making purposeful attempts to call him by his name. But it's weird that I'm having trouble doing that, you know?

Things that make me happy
I got this idea from Jessica at A Little Dose of Sweetness and I wanted to copy her because she has a good point that sometimes we forget to record the happy things on our blogs - that often we focus on the frustrating or stressful things in our lives because they are easier to write about, or we use our blogs as therapy to get out our frustrations, etc. But we need to remember the happy, fun times, too. Sometimes even more importantly than the negative.
So without further ado, here is my random list of 10 things that make me happy at this point in my life:
1. That daily, sometimes several times a day, Fuss bursts into song and dances around the room, singing some made up song that is in her head. Lately, her 2 favorite topics have been Racecars (she even makes a whooshing sound within the song) and Flowers. The songs go on for awhile and she will sing "I'm not done yet" if we clap too soon.
2. That the one client (a friend of ours' father) that Daddy Fuss got last month was so happy with the work he did for his business, that he is now having him do a ton of stuff for his personal computers and his family's personal computers. We may be able to finance our entire trip to Disney based on the work he is giving us lately. Very exciting stuff.
3. Cute baby boy clothes. I always though that boy clothes weren't as fun as girl clothes (and I still think that might be the case, if you line them up side by side), but I have found and been given a lot of really cute little boy clothes that make me smile when I see them. Of course, anything that tiny is pretty cute in general.
4. Elephants, especially in stuffed toy form. My mom bought a stuffed elephant for the baby to add to the decorations for my shower (I've been oddly obsessed with elephants this pregnancy) which was jungle animal themed and it is SO cute and cuddly. And then my friend Jo did an elephant-themed invitation for my other shower and it is absolutely precious.
5. This is my birthday month! We've been making our plans to celebrate, which is always exciting. Despite the fact that my birthday is 10 days before I deliver, I am still looking forward to it quite a bit. I don't want a big party, even though it's a big birthday, but I am looking forward to spending time with my family and a few friends and my annual make-over with my mom.
6. Fuss has been especially mommy-centric lately. Sometimes this can be frustrating, but it's nice to see that in fact, she DOES like me as much as she likes her daddy and sometimes it's nice to be the only one who can make her happy.
7. Breakfast foods. This is a weird one for me, since I am a self-proclaimed hater of breakfast foods, but lately I cannot seem to get enough of several special breakfasts that used to be rarities in our house and have now become much more regular. I had a habit of always wanting to go out to breakfast on the weekends and often skipping breakfast altogether during the week, but these special breakfasts are really appealing to me all the time, so I'm forgoing eating out to make these and often even adding one to the weekday mornings. My breakfast obsessions these days are Daddy Fuss's Sausage Gravy and Biscuits, a dish we call Brie Slug, muffins, and cinnamon rolls. All of them are especially yummy and start my day with a smile.
8. Rain. As hot as it's been lately, a nice afternoon rainstorm does a lot to relieve some of the heat and mugginess from the air, and listening to the rain drip onto the windows is so relaxing. Especially when Fuss is taking a nap and I get some down time, too, it is so peaceful. I am happy to have anything relaxing and peaceful in my life these days.
9. My husband. He is amazing. He works hard at a job he dislikes so that he can support us and then he has been so supportive and encouraging of me during these hard days of pregnancy and he does more than his fair share of work around here. He cooks or brings home food when I just can't handle cooking. He helps with Fuss - giving her baths or diaper changes or serving her her dinner. He has been helping out in the middle of the night this week when she has been waking up and being difficult in the night.
10. My Birkenstocks. I can't seem to get any other my other shoes on my feet, so it's wonderful that I have some comfortable shoes that are supportive. It's also convenient that it's summer time I can get away with wearing them with everything.

7 Quick Takes: Waking, organizing, covered in baby powder...
1. I took Fuss to a special program for little kids at the local library today. It was cute and I was meeting a friend who has a daughter Fuss's age to kind of make it a bit of a play date. But when I got there my friend and anther friend of hers were already sitting on the floor with their kids and since I wanted to join them, I sat down on the floor, too. Bad idea. I attempted to sit "Indian Style" (I know, they call it "Criss-cross applesauce" now, but when I was a kid it was Indian Style and so...) with Fuss on my lap. That lasted about 10 minutes. I then had to shift my legs and I was still in trouble, but it was better. I sat there for an hour (or more - I lost track) and then spent the rest of the day in horrible pain, especially in my tailbone and lower back. When Fuss went down for her nap, I laid down, too and was nearly whimpering with the pain. I guess I need to find a time to go see my chiropractor. Soon.
2. We've been to the playground at Chic-fil-A twice this week. Anything to get her out of the house and away from the TV, but remain in the air conditioning. I'm getting desperate.
3. Daddy Fuss has been picking up a bunch of freelance clients lately. It's nice, because it is bringing in some extra money, but it's taking up what little free time he has these days. Sigh. You can't have it all.
4. Fuss came out of her room after bed time last night covered in baby powder. She had climbed up on her changing table and grabbed the large bottle and sprinkled herself and her bed thoroughly and liberally with baby powder. Ugh. A quick rinse in the shower, new PJs, new sheets, etc. and she's back in bed, but the room reeks of baby powder.
5. This week I have been organizing my life with regards to the time when the baby will come. I have a care giver for Fuss, a back-up care-giver in case I go into labor on my own during the day and everyone is already at work, etc. I am trying to pick out what I need to pack in my bags for the hospital, etc. (Thus far, my own needs haven't been on the radar - I'm currently trying to decide which baby clothes to bring to the hospital)
6. We had another 3am wake-up with Fuss last night. We took turns dealing with her requests and lack of desire to sleep alone in her bed. I don't know what is going on with her lately. Maybe this is her (delayed) 27-month sleep regression? I dunno.
7. Major dry-walling is going on tomorrow at Casa Fuss. My BFF's husband (arguably DH's best friend) is coming over to help with the installation and Fuss and I are escaping over to their house to play with their boys. I'm bringing supplies over to make dinner at their house, since there isn't room to feed and serve that many people at my house right now.

Writing and Symptoms.
I am SO excited. I just got invited to join an online writing critique group and I am psyched. I am inspired to write, but I have no idea if what I'm writing is any good and I am too scared to show it to my husband or mom or whoever. People that love me uncondtionally? No way. Total strangers on the internet? Why not?
******************************************
I had an OB appt this morning and they agreed to schedule my induction for the date I want (yay!) and despite my (possibly psychosomatic) worry that I am showing mild signs of preeclampsia, this midwife wasn't concerned in the slightest. I go back in 2 weeks, but that should be my last every 2 weeks appointment and then I should begin my once a week appointments.
My current symptoms/pregnancy status is thus:

I go back in 2 weeks, but that should be my last every 2 weeks appointment and then I should begin my once a week appointments.
My current symptoms/pregnancy status is thus:
- Lots more swelling. I had to officially take my rings off on Sunday and I had to abandon any shoes but my Birkenstocks as of Saturday. (they look FABulous with my church dresses, I gotta tell you!)
- A relapse in "morning sickness" that much like my early pregnancy comes at random, with no apparent triggers and is mostly just gagging and nausea, with occasional extremes into very small amounts of actual vomiting.
- Random dizzy spells that seemingly have nothing to do with standing/rising too fast. They come out of no where.
- Aches in my joints, especially after standing/walking too much/long or lying on one side for too long at night. I also cannot cross my legs comfortably for any length of time at all it seems and my natural position for sitting is much more spread out than I ever remember it being.
- Lower back pain, punctuated by a sore tail bone (though I mostly blame this on the nearly 90 minutes of sitting on the uncomfortable bleachers at my husband's softball game last week. This week a brought a slightly more comfortable chair).
- Weird pressure-like feelings in my abdomen that are indefinable as to whether they are bowel-related, baby moving, or can occasionally make me wonder if I'm suddenly overcome with hormonal urges.
- Random headaches.
- A somewhat constantly shifting belly. I can watch him move around in there about half of the day. It's sort of alien-esque sometimes. (Even my dad commented to me that my tummy looked lopsided the other day. Yup. That's your grandson.)

A weekend of movies
We were invited out for a Date Nite with our best friends last night - they had managed to score a babysitter for both of their boys and were doing dinner and a movie and invited us to join them. My MIL graciously offered to babysit, so off we went. We had a nice dinner, and the others all had a couple of drinks and then we walked over to the movie theater (they sort of share a parking lot), though due to some slow service, we missed the movie time we were planning to see, but thankfully it had another showing half an hour later, so we caught that one. (I bought a drink and it was the biggest drink I've ever seen. I drank most of it, but we did share it a bit between the four of us, and I still couldn't finish it all before the 2 1/2 hour movie was through!)
We saw Inception. It was interesting. It was complicated and there were a few annoying issues (the flashbacks to other levels right in the middle of momentum, for example. I get the point - to show the different levels and their passage of time, but it was frustrating anyhow. I was also completely annoying by the actress who played Leonardo DiCaprio's wife, Marion Cotilliard. Plus, her name was Mal {which means "bad" in Spanish and French} and they never referred to her as anything else other than that, so it didn't seem like it was even a nickname for anything. Why on earth would any parent name their kid "bad"?) Overall, it was a good movie, but not one I'm going to watch over and over again.
This weekend, we also watched 2 movies on DVD that we got by mail (Netflix/Blockbuster). One was Swing Vote, which I have to say I really liked. There were quite a few cheesy parts, but by the end, the movie had redeemed itself and I loved the ultimate point in the movie. The other movie was Star Trek, the new movie that is supposedly trying to revamp the franchise. I loved the casting of some of the actors ("Bones" McCoy in particular, though I really liked Scotty as well) and I loved that they got Leonard Nemoy to reprise his roll and play a much older, future Spock. If you liked Star Trek originally, you'll probably like this one, too!
The contractions are still coming often, if not regularly or anything. Some are hard, some are not. One thing I've noticed is that when the ones that are not as strong last a long time, they end up hurting a lot more as time goes by. (this reminds me of the cycle of labor contractions - more intense with time, as if they grow and fall) My lower back has been aching a lot lately and my legs get tired really easily, so standing or walking for long periods of time is tiring me out! The heat around here has been driving me crazy, I feel like I can never get cool anymore!
The inner drywall has been put in place and I have a bedroom door installed, so it's actually beginning to look like a wall and a truly-enclosed room! They made a lot of progress this weekend and that makes me very happy! The electrician is (supposedly) coming today, so that could mean a lot more forward momentum this week! I am hoping to really begin to see some movement closer to completion (there is still a ton to do, but I'm feeling like the end is in sight, at least, even if it's far off!)
There are 3 weeks until my 30th birthday, and 31 until the baby is born.

Quiet, Babies, and Getting it all done
Can I tell you how much I appreciate a little time first thing in the morning when I can turn on PBS and Fuss can watch her shows while I check in with the internet/take a shower/get dressed/finish waking up. She is currently sitting on the couch, in nothing but a clean diaper, holding her juice cup in her hand, sucking on her Maddie the Monkey, and watching Curious George - silently. It's not often that she is silent, so I take what I can get.
We went swimming yesterday at my BFF's house. I didn't bring her Maddie the Monkey, so she refused to take a nap, despite my best efforts. We ended up leaving mid-afternoon and she fell asleep within minutes in the car. It was a really nice day, despite the weirdness that was my attempt at her naptime, sans monkey. I was very relieved to not have to go into work, to be able to sleep in, to get stuff done around the house (3 loads of laundry, dishes!)
Today, I have a list of things to do, but I'm still sitting here relishing the quiet, wasting time on the internet. I need to go to the mall, Target, and the grocery store, all before 12:30 when I have a manicure appointment which will likely be immediately followed by Fuss's nap time. And then the day is often shot. (She sleeps for a couple of hours, then it takes her some time to fully wake up and be willing and ready to go out, so I don't often get the opportunity to run errands in the afternoon.)
I'm getting really excited about the arrival of this little boy. I am ready to be holding him in my arms instead of my belly. (Not to mention, I'd love to be able to set him down on occasion!) I think Daddy Fuss is, too. He was asking when my next appointment is because he wants to know my status, though since I won't be quite 35 weeks at my next appointment, I'm not sure if they will check me or not (or if I want them to - I vaguely remember that being very uncomfortable).
But my house is still in disarray, I have no place to finish putting stuff away, I have no place to put the loot I'll likely bring home this weekend after the first of my baby showers. So that is frustrating and concerning. The demolition is almost all done, he has a little bit to finish today and then he can begin on some of the dry walling, which I'm really happy for. I am SO ready for this project to be done, to be in my new room, to have Fuss in hers. Mostly, I am ready to have my house back! This is really messing with my nesting instinct and my new found desire for a cleaner, more organized house.
I am looking forward to a fun, but busy weekend!

Nearly 34 weeks
Just finished my last day of "temp" work for my dad. I have nothing else on the books except for a little paper work that I can do from home, and my weekly 1-2 hours of voluntary (I get paid, but I don't HAVE to go in) check in. I'm actually thrilled to be done, since I have hated having to wake up early to go to work. I do, however, greatly appreciate the money!
Sleep has been an issue in our house of late. Fuss went through almost a week of very early (by everyone's standards) to early-for-her wakings, despite some less-than-stellar naps and at least one late night. BUT! We seem to have tricked her into sleeping at least a little later the last 2 mornings (by wearing her out more and then putting her to bed later) and so I am hoping we are getting back to normal in that department. My 6am alarm, however, has severely damaged my best sleeping time (usually between my 4:30 pee break and whenever Fuss gets up or Daddy Fuss wakes me up) and so I am greatly looking forward to getting back to that starting tomorrow! I know Daddy Fuss is, too, since I've had to wake him to help with Fuss when I leave for work, or he's actually been the one several times to get up and attempt to put her back to sleep to no avail.
She's going through a phase right now where she only wants to sleep in her bed. She's actually become a bit of a home-body, which confuses me. (And is messing with me, too, since with all the chaos at the house, the last place I want to be is home, if I can avoid it.) But our adventure yesterday with attempting to avoid the demolition noise and napping at Grandma's house didn't go over as I had hoped (it was just short of a dismal failure. She slept, but not until much later in the afternoon than she should have - especially since she told me she was tired even earlier than her usual nap time). So today, we are trying again, with a few minor changes, and we shall see what happens.
It is hot. It is incredibly hot and muggy out today. I began to perspire on the very short walk from the back door to the car, a mere 15 feet away. Partially, of course, my "upholstered" body is to blame, but everyone is commenting on how hot it is this summer (weird, since we had the coldest, longest winter we've had in years this past winter). I do not recommend getting pregnant in December, especially when you live in a hot climate to begin with, since the worst time of your pregnancy will be in the hottest months of all. Part of me wonders if my increase in contractions is evidence of him "baking" faster than usual, though I know that's ridiculous!
My baby shower is this weekend and I am looking forward to it. It will be smaller, more laid back, more intimate, than my first shower, and I am completely fine with that. I know it's my second baby and I am grateful that my friends and family are willing and wanting to do anything for me, let alone shower me with gifts, ha ha!

7 Quick Takes
1. We found the perfect palate for our exterior colors last weekend, and now seem to have lost the card/can't find them again. Growl.
2. Our initial Home Improvement Fund is severely depleted. The money that we were all so sure would cover everything and possibly then some is dwindling quickly. And as I look out my sliding glass door, I see that we have SO much to do. I'm freaking out. From the impression my dad gave me, I thought we'd have some left over. Or at least as much as we have left for decorating both bedrooms. And we haven't even purchased the dry wall yet! Panic is about to be induced.
3. So tired of changing stinky diapers. And smearing cream on diaper rash!
4. Feeling like a hippopotamus. Heard the term "pregopotamus" this week and glared at my husband to remind him to never use that to refer to me.
5. Heard a story from my dad about his impression of my mom when she was about this pregnant w/ me all those years ago. He described her as "the cutest thing" and assured me that despite my current feelings of unwieldiness, my husband likely doesn't feel that way. This was in direct opposition to the way my mom always implies that my dad felt about her when she was pregnant (she thought he was repulsed by her being "fat"). It was an interesting perspective to hear. Made me feel a little better!
6. Inside demo should be starting next week on the new room. I have to figure out how to push everything away from the wall this weekend (okay, Daddy Fuss does all the heavy work, but I have to figure it out) and I know this means we'll be eating off tray tables for at least a week. Let's hope that's all it means.
7. Daddy Fuss took Fuss to the doctor this morning, since the diarrhea and fever have continued now for 3 days. She woke at 5 am again this morning (way out of the norm for her) and we are both so tired. I can't wait until nap time.

(Nearly) 33 weeks
I had my bi-monthly appointment at the OB yesterday and learned a lot.
The best and biggest thing was that they are still very much on board with inducing me at 39 weeks, due to the proposed size of said munchkin. This has been a worry of mine over the last few weeks, since they won't put it on the schedule until 36-37 weeks and I've been sort of counting on that date as my "end date." (Plus, it's super convenient for everybody. My mom and SIL have requested time off, the following weekend is Labor Day weekend, so everybody has a little extra time off to come play with both Fuss and the little guy, etc.)
My BP is up - still not in the scary zone, but higher than it's been, and higher than it ever was w/ Fuss. She asked me if I'd been having headaches before I even got the chance to mention my 48-hour headache. She asked a bunch of questions about swelling (very little, though a few sporadic episodes where it's been really bad for an hour or two) and indigestion feelings, and she checked my reflexes and verified that my protein levels were normal in my samples. (Yes) Basically, I have a few symptoms of possible pre-ecclampsia and she wants me to monitor my symptoms more closely and to call if they get worse, etc. She also encouraged me to go ahead and take the Rx I have for my headache to try and kill it and see if we could then start from scratch.
The other info I got was that the hospital tour isn't necessary. They were able to give me my paperwork at the Dr's office and I can mail it in for pre-registration. Daddy Fuss and I haven't discussed it yet, but I'm leaning towards skipping the tour altogether and just making my mom happy about the shower schedule.
I'm not happy that there is a chance I might have pre-ecclampsia, but I am happy that I feel like they are taking some of my more annoying symptoms a little more seriously. The one midwife often blows everything off - don't worry, you're fine, you feel different during pregnancy, etc. She is probably right, but I've been asking about my elevated-for-me BP since the end of my 1st trimester when I started getting the pregnancy migraines, and this is the first time I feel like they have truly listened/noticed a potential problem.
I took Fuss to my BFF's house yesterday while I was at my appointment. She ran around with BFF's boys (ages 7 and 3) for several hours and then we all went swimming in their pool when I got there after my appointment. Fuss took an unprecedented 4-hour nap that afternoon. (But then she didn't want to go to bed and woke WAY early for her this morning, so I guess we paid for it, either way.) Now we're both tired and I am really looking forward to nap time!

I had a play date with my husband.
You know what baffles me? That ice cream at the grocery store is tax-free, but toilet paper (certainly the more "needed for life" of the two) is not. That just messes with my sense of logic. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the tax break on the ice cream - because I love ice cream, but my sense of reason just cannot fathom that.
On Sunday, my SIL, J offered to take Fuss from 8:30am to 4:30pm to join a group from her church to go to the local zoo (it was $5 zoo day, I learned later. I figured there was something going on - maybe a group discount or something, because those darn adult tickets are expensive). We offered to make breakfast for the 2 aunts (my other SIL, LP, was also going) and then they took her on to church and were going over to the zoo immediately following.
For the first time in her life, Fuss needed someone called out of church during the service. No one has any idea what was happening, or why she was suddenly fussy and upset. (She had been in this class before, had walked right in without an issue, had made a friend, and had been there for a couple of hours already. They figured out later that she was very hungry, but she had had a good breakfast and they give a small snack in the class, so I am still confused as to what caused it, but I will likely never know.) They ended up skipping the zoo because she was fussy and complaining that she was tired and hungry and taking her to lunch w/ Oma (my MIL) and then brought her home. She apparently ate everything in sight but then refused to take a nap until mommy and daddy got home at 3 (a very late nap for her), coming home earlier than planned because of her issue. No big deal, we had had a nice day together, etc. but it was sort of strange, overall. She was clingy to me after her nap, as well, though totally willing to go down for her nap as soon as we got home. (She apparently kept asking for Aunt J in the class, and then when Aunt J got there, she burst into tears and cried "I want my mommy!" which is a new experience overall! I have heard stories about separation anxiety, and clingy phases that children go through, and I've waited for them to happen, and never actually seen them. This 15 minute episode is the closest I've seen in my obviously very Independent girl. )
When J offered to take Fuss, she set one stipulation: we were not allowed to work. This was a play day. We appreciated that - Daddy Fuss has been working SO hard, such long hours at the office, picking up freelance jobs and helping my dad with the construction. We had quite a time figuring out what to do with all this proposed freedom! We went over to the fancy mall and walked around. We checked out the iPad at the Apple store (love it, we're dreaming about it) and went to Build-a-Bear for our upcoming arrival and had lunch at the Cheesecake Factory (and cheesecake, of course. Simply delicious cheesecake!). We walked into some of the high-end stores that I typically don't go into (I like shopping, but I am really the type that I'm not going to look if I know that I for sure cannot buy anything, therefore I usually don't go into Coach stores - the outlet, maybe, but not the regular retail store - and Tiffany's, etc.) but it was fun to window shop. We also stopped at Brookstone and sat in the massage chairs for a little while, getting electronic massages.
I've been plagued with some bad headaches again lately, but today seems to be the worst in awhile. I woke with it, feeling like I'd slept funny and I know I slept poorly all night - my longest (by far) stretch of sleep without waking was 90 minutes. But my usual tricks to get past a morning where I wake up with a headache didn't completely work. (it's better than it was - I can function and take care of Fuss as needed, though I imagine she'll be watching a little more TV than is ideal today, but we've already been to Target, where she was happily very well behaved)
I'm hoping for an easy day. I have things to do, of course, but I plan to take it easy. I've also noticed an increase in contractions this morning (including one in the shower that I wouldn't have noticed if I wasn't scrubbing my tummy at the time - apparently the idea of a water birth really has some merit!) so, yet another reason to take it a little easier.
